Hello! My name is Inosho.
I would like to talk about my experience hiking the Cleveland Way along the English coast.
- What is the Cleveland Way along the British coast?
- Hiking along the British coast and local delicacies
- Sometimes it derails.
- Staying overnight in the wild along the coast of England
- Remember the Japanese scenery or cheat on the bus.
- You should definitely hike the Cleveland Way during your visit to the Yorkshire area!
What is the Cleveland Way along the British coast?

Cleveland Way is a National Trail in North Yorkshire, England. The National Trail is, in essence, a hiking trail. The total length of the trail is approximately 177 km.
I hiked between Whitby and Scarborough on the route of the Cleveland Way.

There are many small towns scattered along the route between Whitby and Scarborough, including Robin Hood’s Bay, which is like a way station.
The photo shows the residential area of Robin Hood’s Bay.

In some places, farms and routes are combined as part of agritourism as well as towns. In some places, the farm is combined with a route as part of agritourism.
I enjoyed hiking through the countryside, which retains a traditional English atmosphere, and along the Cleveland Way, where sheep graze.
Hiking along the British coast and local delicacies
So here is my specific hiking experience on the Cleveland Way.

As mentioned earlier, walking the Cleveland Way sometimes takes you through rural areas. I myself remember going into two or three towns while walking from Whitby to Scarborough.
There are some local eateries in the towns that cater to hikers and cyclists.

Since Cleveland Way is a coastal hiking trail, I saw many fish and chip stores.

There was also ice cream made from fresh cow and sheep’s milk sold on the route near the farm.
To be honest, I really wanted to try these local delicacies. However, I was in the middle of a hiking and camping trip at the time. So for financial reasons, I could not eat them.
If I ever have the chance to visit the Cleveland Way again, I definitely want to try them then.
Sometimes it derails.
By the way, there are also other hiking trails around the Cleveland Way route. Those trails are connected to the Cleveland Way. So I got sidetracked a few times and ended up on different hiking trails.

I ended up hiking on many different hiking trails, but as a result, O was able to see more different scenery, which was enjoyable.

After the course derailment, we managed to get back on the original Cleveland Way route. The photo shows a small town that was on the route.
In a word, English countryside towns are kind of cool. The Japanese countryside is somehow prettier than the English countryside. Well, both have their own advantages, so there is no need to compare them at all, to be honest.
Staying overnight in the wild along the coast of England
Around sunset in the evening, there are no more people on the Cleveland Way route. Everyone has finished hiking or biking and is heading home.
However, I wanted to spend the night in the wilderness on the Cleveland Way route. So I started hiking in the evening.

As night fell and it became dark while we were walking on the cliffs along the coast, we looked for a place to sleep in the vicinity. To avoid falling off the cliff, I chose a large place to sleep a short distance from the cliff’s tip.
I put on a sleeping bag and slept with an umbrella over the sleeping bag to protect against rain. As Britain is famous for its rainy weather, it had been raining for the past few days, and I thought it would probably rain again tonight.
Sure enough, there were several sudden and temporary showers in the middle of the night, which woke me up several times. There was also an incident where my umbrella was blown away to the sea by the wind.
Also, the umbrella did not cover my sleeping legs. So when I woke up in the morning, the soles of my feet were soaking wet.

I had just woken up in the morning and the sunrise spread out before me was just too beautiful. The chubby soles of my feet were reduced to zero by the view of the ocean and the sunrise.
Remember the Japanese scenery or cheat on the bus.

When passing through the countryside on Cleveland Way, I sometimes had to walk on the roadway. However, there were not too many cars passing by overall and it was easy to walk.

This picture here is one that personally reminds me somewhat of Hakone, Japan. In fact, just below this residential area is a river. The river below the residential area is actually a river, and when combined with the river below the residential area, the scenery becomes even more Ghibli-like.
By the way, as mentioned above, it is well known that it rains a lot in England. However, when I looked it up, it seems that Japan is actually a rainy country as well. When I think back on it, it is true that Japan is a rainy country.
Perhaps the reason I was reminded of Hakone in Japan when I walked along Cleveland Way had something to do with the rainy climate common to both Japan and England.

Well, after a day in the field from Whitby, I made it to Scarborough without incident. But to tell the truth, my legs were so tired at the end of the day that I cheated by taking the bus.
I am sure I cheated, but it was only 15 minutes away by bus. So it was not a big cheat, but I think I was able to keep it to a minimum.
You should definitely hike the Cleveland Way during your visit to the Yorkshire area!
The Cleveland Way is a large national trail in the Yorkshire region that stretches for 177 km. As mentioned in the article, there are various towns and other local delicacies along the route.
It is not easy to walk the entire Cleveland Way. However, there are hotels and other accommodations in the towns along the route. So if you get tired, you can take a rest on the way.
Also, I remember that there are some points along the route where you can take a break from the route. So you can walk at your own pace for as long as you want to walk.
When you visit the Yorkshire area such as Whitby, please try hiking the Cleveland Way, which allows you to walk along the English coast!
