“Tondo Matsuri” is an annual fire festival in which people gather at shrines and in the community to burn kadomatsu (gate pine trees) and pine decorations decorated for the New Year.

It is an important New Year’s event that has various meanings, such as the belief that going to the “Tondo Matsuri” will bring good luck in one’s studies and that eating Zenzai made with rice cakes baked at the festival will bring good health and good fortune.

The fires of the Tondo Festival are burning.
The fire warms not only our bodies but also our hearts.

The guardian dogs also look a little cold!

But the fire seems to have warmed them up a bit!

“Oyama Hachiman Shrine” on January 12, 2025

On January 1, 2025, the approach to the temple is snowy, a far cry from New Year’s Day!

The stone steps were also covered with snow, snow, snow!
The Shinto priests and Ujiko shoveled the snow in advance so we could go up, thank goodness.

The stone steps to the main shrine are also in the snow.

We will visit the main shrine.
Oyama Hachiman Shrine has four small shrines: Baba Shrine, Omatenjin Shrine, Inari Shrine and Atago Shrine.
