Montenegro: History and Attractions of Budva, a Resort Town on the Adriatic Sea

Hello! I am Inosho, a world traveler. This time I would like to introduce Budva, a resort town in Southern Europe, Montenegro, located on the Balkan Peninsula.

History of Montenegro and Budva

Budva is a city in Montenegro on the Adriatic Sea. The appearance of the city gives it a very Mediterranean coastal aspect. Across the Adriatic Sea are the Italian cities of Bari and Pescara.

Budva is an old city that has been ruled by many different countries, including the former Italian Republic of Venice, the Ottoman Turks, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Serbia.

Montenegro and Budva have been influenced by each of these countries to a greater or lesser extent. Among them, I personally felt that Budva is somewhat Italian-like.

The name “Montenegro” itself means “black mountain” in Veneto (Venetian dialect of Italian). You can feel the vestiges of the Venetian Republic in this area as well.

Montenegro has a large South Slavic population.

It is true that Montenegro today was once influenced by Italy. However, the majority of Montenegrins are of South Slavic descent.

This is a big difference from Italy, where the main ethnic group is Roman or Germanic.

Around the 6th century, Slavs migrated southward to the Balkan Peninsula from what is now Poland. They assimilated with the native Illyrians and formed the South Slavic nation.

In addition to Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and other countries in the Balkan Peninsula are also South Slavic countries.

By the way, there may be a stereotype that Slavs are a bit tough-looking. However, many Montenegrins are very laid-back and cheerful. They may be more like Italians in this respect.

Budva’s attractions include the sea, mountains, and other natural features

Budva is an ancient city in Montenegro with a complicated history. If I were to personally mention Budva’s charms, I would say that they are its natural features, such as the sea and mountains.

As for the Adriatic Sea, which is the main attraction of Budva, of course, going to the beach is the standard. However, if you take the hiking trail up the mountain, you can get a panoramic view of the entire sea from a little further away, as shown in the photo above.

To get to the hiking trail, you need to climb up the hill from the center of the city toward the mountain, which is a bit difficult. It is a little bit difficult. The entrance to the hiking trail is located at Izvor pijace vode on Google Maps.

Hiking trails provide a panoramic view of not only the sea, but also the peaceful mountains that stretch all around.

The charm of Budva is that you can enjoy both ocean and mountain nature in one place.

Is Budva the Kuwait of Montenegro?

After Budva was developed as an urban resort area, millionaires from Russia and England bought real estate in Budva, which quickly increased the percentage of wealthy people.

“Kuwait of Montenegro”.

Due to the increase of wealthy people in the originally small population, Budva is sometimes called the “Kuwait of Montenegro”. It is quite an interesting nickname, isn’t it?

Budva is also famous for its nightlife, with young people partying until morning. Of course, the sea and mountain nature are not the only things to enjoy in Budva.

When you hear the word “Kuwait” in Montenegro, you may think that Budva is expensive. However, the cost of living in Budva is not that high.

The grilled prawns I had at a restaurant in Budva cost about 1,000 Japanese yen. The price was a bit high due to the weak yen, but it was reasonable.

Even taking into account the cost of other services such as lodging, I think the prices in Italy and Croatia are higher than those in the same Adriatic coast area.

Let’s go to Montenegro while traveling in Italy!

Let’s go sightseeing mainly in Budva, Montenegro!” But, to be honest, Budva is not a place where you can say, “Let’s mainly visit Budva, Montenegro!

However, if you have been to Italy, you might want to visit Budva as a city that was under the influence of Italy.

Maybe Budva will become your “Blue Ocean”.
