Hiking along the coasts of European countries

Hello! My name is Inosho.
I spent about 3 months hiking (camping) in Spain, France, England, and Montenegro. I would like to share with you some of the stories of my hiking along the coasts of the above mentioned European countries.

Hiking trails by the beach and farm

As mentioned above, I was traveling in four European countries hiking. As far as I know, there are hiking trails in various places in Europe, such as urban cities – suburbs and rural farmlands.

I think the reason why there are so many hiking trails in Europe is because of the large population of hikers and cyclists.

Among hiking trails, I am personally interested in the “agritourism” movement, which aims to revitalize communities by creating hiking trails on farms and agricultural land.

At first glance, the hiking trails along the coast may seem unrelated to farms. However, as you can see in the photo above, sometimes the other side of the trail is farmland.

It was refreshing to be able to enjoy both ocean and farm scenery on the same hiking trail.

Sometimes even hiking on the roadway

I am not sure if I would call it a hiking trail, but at times I walked along the side of the roadway along the beach. There are many cyclists on the roadway, but few hikers.

Naturally, walking alongside a roadway is a bit scary because cars pass right by you. Therefore, I prefer to walk on well-developed hiking trails in nature rather than on the roadway.

Weather is important

When I hiked the coastal hiking trails in England, I was plagued by rain. I think it is rather well-known that England has many rainy days.

Also, most of the rain in the UK comes in sudden torrents. So there were times when I set out on a hiking course thinking it was going to be sunny, only to be hit by a squall-like downpour.

I am currently in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and we have our fair share of rainy days here as well. So when I go hiking, I try to check the weather in advance with the weather forecast.

Hiking along the coast is recommended

Perhaps it is because I am Japanese and used to seeing the ocean, but at 27 years old, I am not that impressed with the ocean.

However, I think hiking along the coast is meaningful. Even if I don’t concentrate on looking at the ocean, I can concentrate more on walking while listening to the sound of the ocean and the wind.

Hiking is a relatively good workout if you concentrate on it. Therefore, I believe that the environment in which you hike is actually a rather important factor.

The hiking trails along the beach are often not very crowded. If anything, everyone is probably going to the beach.

However, as mentioned above, the absence of people makes it easier to concentrate on the hiking. If you ever travel to Europe, try to find a hiking trail along the coast!
